Description
A luxurious twist on classic French toast featuring a rich custard base and a crispy, caramelized sugar topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (12–14 slices)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk for a dairy-free version)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar for a deeper flavor)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste for an extra touch)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg for a warm twist)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Slice the bread into thick slices, about 1 inch each.
- Arrange the bread slices in a greased baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring each slice is well-coated.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, allowing the bread to soak.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of sugar over the top, using a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until crispy. If you don’t have a torch, broil it for 1-2 minutes until bubbly and caramelized—watch closely to avoid burning!
Notes
Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and fresh berries. Drizzle with warm maple syrup or chocolate sauce for added indulgence.
