Description

Enjoy the delightful flavors of traditional orange chicken in a vegan package, made with crispy tofu and a sweet-tangy sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup neutral oil (canola works well)
  • 1 package tofu (16 oz / 454 g)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/41/3 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/31/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Press and pat dry the tofu, then cut it into small 1-inch nuggets.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and garlic powder.
  3. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients until achieving a slightly runny batter.
  4. Coat the tofu nuggets in the batter until evenly covered.
  5. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add the battered tofu pieces.
  6. Fry each side for about 5-6 minutes until golden brown and then drain on paper towels.
  7. In a bowl, combine sauce ingredients: orange juice, sugar, tamari, vinegar, Sriracha (if using), ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes.
  8. Pour the sauce into the skillet with tofu over medium heat and simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened.
  9. Mix in the crispy tofu, ensuring each piece is well-coated with the sauce.
  10. Serve over steamed rice and enjoy!

Notes

For crispier tofu, press out excess moisture and consider freezing and thawing it beforehand. Adjust the sugar for desired sweetness.
