- 1/2 cup neutral oil (canola works well)
- 1 package tofu (16 oz / 454 g)
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 1/4–1/3 cup water
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/3–1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha (optional)
- 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for thickening)
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
Instructions
- Press and pat dry the tofu, then cut it into small 1-inch nuggets.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and garlic powder.
- Gradually add water to the dry ingredients until achieving a slightly runny batter.
- Coat the tofu nuggets in the batter until evenly covered.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add the battered tofu pieces.
- Fry each side for about 5-6 minutes until golden brown and then drain on paper towels.
- In a bowl, combine sauce ingredients: orange juice, sugar, tamari, vinegar, Sriracha (if using), ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes.
- Pour the sauce into the skillet with tofu over medium heat and simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened.
- Mix in the crispy tofu, ensuring each piece is well-coated with the sauce.
- Serve over steamed rice and enjoy!
Notes
For crispier tofu, press out excess moisture and consider freezing and thawing it beforehand. Adjust the sugar for desired sweetness.
