Homemade Navajo Tacos

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Experience a taste of Native American culinary tradition with these crispy fry bread tacos, perfect for any meal occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Chili beans
  • Taco meat
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Avocado
  • Olives

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Gradually add the hot water and knead with your hands until a dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  3. Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for about 10 minutes.
  4. While the dough is resting, heat 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350 degrees.
  5. Take golf-ball-sized pieces of dough and roll them into balls.
  6. On a floured surface, gently roll each ball into circles about 6-7 inches in diameter.
  7. Fry the dough in hot oil for about 20 seconds or until it puffs up and turns golden brown. Flip and fry for an additional 10-20 seconds.
  8. Remove the fry bread and set it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Keep them warm in the oven while frying the remaining pieces.
  9. Once all fry bread is done, spread the chili beans and taco meat over the fry bread, then add your favorite toppings. Serve warm!

Notes

Best served with a taco bar for customization. Store leftover fry bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
