Description
A delightful recipe for homemade French bread that results in a warm, crusty loaf perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture is frothy.
- Stir in the olive oil and salt. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a dough starts to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for 30-45 minutes or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
- Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet and allow it to rise for another 20 minutes.
- Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Finally, let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
You can substitute all-purpose flour with bread flour for an even crustier texture. For added flavor, experiment with different oils.
