Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 1/2 cups warm milk
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix flour and salt into the yeast mixture until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  5. Roll cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper into a rectangle.
  6. Roll out the dough into a larger rectangle and position the butter in the center.
  7. Fold the dough over the butter and seal the edges.
  8. Roll out and fold the dough several times to create layers.
  9. Cut the dough into triangles and roll them into croissant shapes.
  10. Place on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour.
  11. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  12. Brush croissants with the egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Store croissants in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, wrap tightly and freeze.
