Description
A delightful and easy-to-make French toast casserole perfect for brunch or cozy breakfasts, combining the classic flavors of French toast with the convenience of a baked dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of bread (preferably brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups of milk
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (e.g., pecans or walnuts)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar for topping
- 1/4 cup butter (melted)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- Tear the bread into bite-sized pieces and arrange them in the prepared dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure it soaks well.
- In another bowl, combine the chopped nuts, brown sugar, and melted butter to create a crumble topping. Generously sprinkle this mixture over the soaked bread.
- Transfer the dish to the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Serve warm, drizzling with maple syrup or dusting with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
For extra flavor, soak the bread overnight in the milk and egg mixture. Feel free to add spices like cardamom or ginger, or try flavored extracts for a twist.
