Description
A delightful comfort food experience that combines the rich essence of French onion soup with pasta, featuring caramelized onions and a gooey layer of Gruyère cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 oz. fettuccine or spaghetti
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian version)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, combine olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized (about 20-25 minutes).
- When the onions are golden brown, pour in the beef broth, add thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing until well coated.
- Transfer to a baking dish, top with Gruyère cheese, and broil until melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
For added depth, try incorporating a splash of white wine into the broth or sautéed mushrooms for an earthy vibe. Keep an eye on the cheese while broiling; it can go from perfect to burnt quickly.
