Description
A warm and comforting Amish White Bread recipe that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches or toast.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water (110°F)
- 1 pinch powdered ginger (optional)
- 1 cup milk (110°F)
- 2/3 cup sugar (you can use less)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 5–1/2 cups bread flour (more or less as needed)
- 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by pouring warm water into a mixing bowl and adding powdered ginger, then sprinkle in active dry yeast. Let sit until frothy.
- Mix in another bowl 1 cup of warm milk and 1/4 cup of vegetable oil or melted butter with the yeast mixture.
- In a large bowl, combine bread flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the flour well and stir until dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two halves. Shape each loaf by rolling it up and sealing the seams.
- Place loaves in greased bread pans, cover, and let rise for 30-60 minutes until doubled.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Brush loaf tops with melted butter.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
- Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack.
Notes
For best results, use warm water (not hot) when activating yeast. Adjust flour as needed for dough consistency.
