Description

A warm and comforting Amish White Bread recipe that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches or toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water (110°F)
  • 1 pinch powdered ginger (optional)
  • 1 cup milk (110°F)
  • 2/3 cup sugar (you can use less)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 51/2 cups bread flour (more or less as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by pouring warm water into a mixing bowl and adding powdered ginger, then sprinkle in active dry yeast. Let sit until frothy.
  2. Mix in another bowl 1 cup of warm milk and 1/4 cup of vegetable oil or melted butter with the yeast mixture.
  3. In a large bowl, combine bread flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center.
  4. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour well and stir until dough begins to form.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into two halves. Shape each loaf by rolling it up and sealing the seams.
  8. Place loaves in greased bread pans, cover, and let rise for 30-60 minutes until doubled.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F. Brush loaf tops with melted butter.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  11. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack.

Notes

For best results, use warm water (not hot) when activating yeast. Adjust flour as needed for dough consistency.
